History of Jigsaw Puzzles

It is generally agreed that the first jigsaw puzzle was created in 1760. This jigsaw puzzle was made from hardwood. To make these puzzles, a picture was painted or glue on the front of the wood, then a saw was used to cut along a pencil tracing that was overlaid the wood. Later on plywood was used to create more intricate designs. These puzzles were designed to aid in teaching geography and even today jigsaw puzzles still remain a primary educational tool.

Cardboard were then used to create jigsaw for children, but in the 1900's, both wooden and cardboard jigsaw puzzles were available. Wooden jigsaw puzzles still dominate but customers are increasingly seeking the cheaper cardboard jigsaws. However, retailers of jigsaw puzzles get a higher profit from wooden jigsaw puzzles then cardboard ones and therefore try to promote wood puzzle more.

The Golden Age of jigsaw puzzle came in the 1920's, when jigsaw puzzle pictures reflected sentimental scenes. One strategy was to make cardboard jigsaw puzzle more difficult. Another was to use jigsaw puzzle for advertising or to make jigsaw puzzle as gifts. There were even programs that offered a weekly jigsaw puzzle contest.

In the depression jigsaw puzzle sold well. For many the weekly jigsaw puzzle constitutes a solitary or group activity.
